PBS TV has a series called “Closer to Truth” that is currently being broadcast. It also includes several books and a website. Robert Lawrence Kuhn, a neuroscientist, hosts it. Interviews with him and other top cosmologists, philosophers, theologians and psychologists are held. On all the Big Questions around a trio of broad topics: Cosmos, Consciousness, God. The three-part trilogy dealt with reality, time and space, mind and consciousness as well as aliens and theology. Here are some of my thoughts on the topic: Is time travel possible?
# Is time travel possible? In reality, I don’t believe that time exists. Time is a measurement of the rate of change. Change does exist. Time is a concept. Time is a mental construct that allows us to deal with change. Some cosmologists believe that time was created at a Big Bang. However, I challenge them to create some time before their peers, or perhaps a television audience. Or at least create a few equations that would create it. Here are a few points.
First, time travel is a fun part of physics. It is fun to play the “what if” game, regardless of whether it is true. The concept forces or makes one think about reality.
Zweitens, Einstein and other scientists have proposed that time travel is a theoretical reality. I am not in their league so I cannot dispute their theories. I will leave that to those who are experts in the field.
Thirdly and most importantly, however, you cannot actually be in either the future or past. Only in the present or future compared to where you are now.
# Is time travel possible? Both yes and no. We can travel to the future in one second per second. This is true regardless of whether or not we want it. You can travel to the future faster if you go to sleep, or if your awareness of rate-of-change (which is how time is or measures really is) is incapacitated. The next thing you know, you’re 12 hours ahead of the time because you get drunk and then pass out. Einstein’s twin paradox, where one twin travels very fast outward bound and stops at home, the other twin stays at home, can prove that we can travel into the future.
